COSTUME DESIGNER

We are seeking a creative and detail-oriented Costume Designer with experience in designing for immersive environments, specifically for children’s entertainment. The ideal candidate will collaborate with the creative team to conceptualize, design, and create costumes that bring characters and storyworlds to life. Your designs will not only captivate young audiences but also enhance their interactive and imaginative experience while prioritizing comfort and safety.

You will be costuming the following characters:

  • The Storybook Fairy shimmers and sparkles, dressed in gossamer and glitter, wool and words.  She exudes a playful presence akin to a child’s favorite babysitter.  She has so many stories in her head that she often forgets where she is or where she put something.  Since she is always needing help, she is also kind and appreciative.  She has an infectious laughter and exudes presence when she is playing with children.  She always wears colors that reflect the season.   She has a leather pouch for magic items and uses a feather quill as a magic wand.

  • Freeda is an ageless dryad with pale green skin and a shock of red hair.  Dressed in flowering vines and leaves, she can blend into the forest when she isn’t dancing and singing her way through the understory.

You will also be providing basic costume support for several puppeteers.

Key Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with director/producer and the creative team to conceptualize and design costumes that align with the vision of the production and enhance storytelling.

• Develop costume designs that are visually engaging, functional, and interactive, ensuring they resonate with young audiences.

• Create sketches, digital renderings, or mood boards to communicate costume concepts effectively.

• Research materials, fabrics, and techniques to create durable, comfortable, and child-friendly costumes.

• Work closely with puppet designers and performers to ensure costumes integrate seamlessly with puppets and performance requirements.

• Manage fittings and alterations to ensure proper fit, functionality, and movement for actors and puppeteers.

• Oversee the construction and finishing of costumes, working with costume fabricators and seamstresses as needed.

• Maintain a balance between artistic vision and budgetary constraints.

• Ensure all costumes meet safety standards and are easy to maintain, repair, or adapt for multiple performances.

• Manage timelines and deliverables to ensure costumes are ready on schedule.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Costume Design, Theater Design, Fashion Design, or a related field.

• Experience in costume design for children’s theater, immersive experiences, or interactive performances.

• Proficiency in design software (e.g., Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop) and familiarity with sewing and garment construction.

• Strong understanding of child psychology and how costumes can enhance imaginative play and storytelling for young audiences.

• Familiarity with costume construction techniques, fabric types, and durability considerations for live performances or interactive exhibits.

• Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with a creative team.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with puppet-based or interactive performances.

• Knowledge of textiles and materials suitable for child-friendly, interactive costumes.

• A strong portfolio showcasing past work on theatrical, immersive, or interactive projects.
